Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230

From 20 January 2027 the Machinery Regulation replaces the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. As a regulation, it applies directly in all Member States. Machinery placed on the market from that date must comply with it.

Classify

Check whether your machine appears in Annex I, Part A or Part B.

Gap-check the risk assessment

Add digital and cybersecurity risks to safety functions.

Update the documents

New legal references in the DoC and instructions, digital instruction format.

Plan certificates

EC type-examination certificates issued under the Directive remain valid until they expire (Article 52(2)); plan new assessments under the Regulation before then.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Machinery Regulation apply?

From 20 January 2027. Until then, machinery is placed on the market under Directive 2006/42/EC.

Can I still sell machinery certified under the Directive after 2027?

Machinery placed on the market before 20 January 2027 under the Directive may remain in the supply chain. Machinery placed on the market from that date must comply with the Regulation.

Can instructions be supplied only in digital form?

Yes, but the manufacturer must provide a paper copy free of charge on request at the time of purchase, and safety information for non-professional users must be supplied on paper.
