EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive makes sure equipment does not generate electromagnetic disturbance above set limits, and works as intended in the presence of disturbance. It applies to almost every electrical and electronic product.

Emission and immunity Self-certification possible Notified Body optional Fixed installations: no CE mark

Scope

The directive covers apparatus (finished equipment and combinations made available as a single functional unit) and fixed installations. Fixed installations must meet the essential requirements but do not carry the CE mark. Radio equipment is covered by the Radio Equipment Directive instead, which includes the same EMC requirements.

Conformity assessment

The manufacturer may use internal production control (Annex II, Module A) or, optionally, EU-type examination by a Notified Body followed by conformity to type (Annex III, Modules B + C). The Notified Body route is useful where harmonised standards were not applied or only in part.

The manufacturer must also carry out an EMC assessment of the apparatus and include it in the technical file.

Frequently asked questions

Do battery-powered products need EMC testing?

Yes. The EMC Directive is not limited by voltage; any apparatus liable to generate or be affected by electromagnetic disturbance is covered.

Is a Notified Body required under the EMC Directive?

No. It is optional. Most manufacturers use internal production control with test reports against harmonised standards.

Do I need EMC and RED for the same product?

No. If the product contains a radio, the RED covers EMC through its Article 3(1)(b), and the EMC Directive does not also apply.
